In 1682, JAMES HUME took his wife Marjorie Scott Johnson and their daughter Barbara on the ship Caledonia to immigrate to America. The family was Quaker and James had been imprisoned at Scotland and most of the family’s property was confiscated for refusing to change his religious beliefs. “James Hume was one of two brothers, men of wealth and standing, who differed on the great questions of the day. One of the brothers conformed, the other, James, was true to the Kirk and the Covenant..He was imprisoned and most of his property confiscated, but through the influence of his brother was released on condition of his immigrating to America. Sir James Hume's father was a knight and a Baron and nearly allied to the House of Stuart, thus tracing back to Robert Bruce.” The ship “Caledonia” was bound for Perth Amboy, New Jersey, but both James and Marjorie died aboard ship of disease and were buried at sea They had apparently befriended William Hogue aboard ship, and he acted as a guardian of their  |
